Izaro is a 14yo Taranaki-based surfer known for her graceful style, effortless flow, and the big smile she brings to every session! She’s been chasing waves since she was five, and fell in love with longboarding at eleven.
For Izaro, surfing is pure joy—it’s her happy place, and it’s the thing she looks forward to every single day. As soon as she reaches the water, everything else fades away. It’s where she feels calm, free, and completely herself.
We asked Izaro:
Why SurfShell?
I love SurfShell because it gives me confidence in the water without compromising comfort or style. Whether I’m charging heavier waves or just cruising on a mellow day, I know my head’s protected and my mind can stay fully in the moment.
Favorite local break?
There’s a reef break close to my house that’s one of my absolute favorites. It’s a mellow wave—perfect for longboarding. The rides are super long, the lines are clean, and when the swell is right, it peels beautifully. It’s not a powerful wave, but that’s what makes it so fun—it gives you time and space to really express your style and get creative on the board.
Biggest achievement so far?
Definitely placing 4th at Malibu’s Queen of the Point last year. Surfing at such an iconic spot alongside some of the best longboarders in the world was a dream come true and a huge confidence boost.
Who or what inspires your surf journey?
I’ve always been inspired by surfers like Rachel Tilly—she’s a natural footer like me and rides with so much grace. Soleil Errico is another huge influence. And meeting Rosie Jaffurs and her crew from Hawaii was amazing—their style, vibe, and the way they ride was some of the best longboarding I’ve ever seen up close.
What advice would you give someone new to the lineup?
Just have fun and enjoy being out there—but also remember to respect everyone else’s fun too. The lineup works best when there’s mutual respect and good vibes.
What does safety in the surf mean to you?
Safety means everything. I’ve already had two major accidents—one left me with a concussion from my longboard, and another time I broke my nose after getting hit by my board. That’s why I wear my SurfShell helmet now. It gives me peace of mind so I can focus on surfing without holding back. Surf safety is also about knowing your surroundings, respecting conditions, and being mindful of others in the water.
Goals and aspirations for the future?
I want to make the New Zealand longboard team, qualify for the WSL Longboard Tour, and hopefully compete in the Olympics if longboarding ever gets the nod. I’m also working toward mastering hang tens with ease, reaching my full potential, and improving my shortboarding so I can explore more waves and travel to new places. I just want to keep learning and growing as a surfer.
